The Rangers traded him to the Chicago Cubs after the 1988 season.
Williams is the only player in MLB history to record a save without throwing a pitch. On April 28, 1989, he entered the game against the San Diego Padres with a 3–1 lead and two outs in the ninth inning. Williams picked off the Padres’ Carmelo Martínez at second base to end the game.
