Maier was born in Petoskey (Michigan) and played college baseball for the University of Toledo. He played college summer baseball for the Harwich Mariners in the Cape Cod Baseball League in 2002. Maier was a junior catcher in 2003 and set school records with a school batting average of.448, 87 runs batted in, and tied school records for 16 doubles as well as 29 stolen bases. He was not awarded Mid-American Conference Baseball Player Of The Year honors, but he was beaten by Brad Snyder from Ball State. He was a first-round pick in the 2003 Major League Baseball Draft. The Kansas City Royals selected him 30th overall.
Maier started his professional career as a catcher with the AZL Royals in 2003. Maier played in 51 games and he hit two home runs. Maier was moved to third base in 2004. In 2004, Maier played for the Burlington Bees as well as the Wilmington Blue Rocks. Due to Mark Teahen’s presence in the organization, Maier was again moved to an outfield position in 2005. In 2005, he played for the Single A High Desert Mavericks and in 2006, he also played for Double-A Wichita Wranglers.
Maier made his Major League pitching debut as the 8th Royals position player to pitch in a game on July 26, 2011, against the Boston Red Sox in Fenway Park. He pitched a scoreless inning, but gave up a double to David Ortiz.
