He is best known for his work in application development in the early days in personal computer software. Later, he founded Lotus where he was responsible for the Lotus 1-2-3 spreadsheet. In 1986, he left Lotus. He co-founded the Electronic Frontier Foundation in 1990 along with John Perry Barlow, John Gilmore and served as its chairman from 1994 to 1994. Kapor was the Mozilla Foundation’s founding chair in 2003. This foundation is the creator of the open-source web browser Firefox. Kapor is an investor in personal computing and a supporter of social causes through Kapor Capital or the Kapor Center. Kapor and Freada Kapor Klein invest in social impact startups in tech that aim to close the gap between opportunity and access for those in underrepresented communities. They also seek to remove barriers to full participation in the tech ecosystem. Kapor and Klein have a holistic approach to eliminating barriers in education and work for all, and fixing any leaks along the tech pipeline. Kapor is a member of the board at SMASH, a non profit founded by Klein to assist underrepresented scholars in enhancing their STEM knowledge and building the skills necessary for a career in science and tech.

Soon after Kapor had left Visi-Corp he and Sachs created an integrated spreadsheet-graphics program. VisiCorp and IBM had a collaboration agreement that Visi-Calc would be shipped concurrently with the PC. However, Lotus was clearly superior to this product. Lotus 1-2-3 was released on January 26, 1983 by Lotus. The product’s name refers to three possible uses: a spreadsheet, graphics program, or database manager. These functions were not used as often in practice, but 1-2-3 was still the most powerful spreadsheet program.

Kapor founded the Kapor Center in 2000 as an institution focused on tech inclusion and social impact. The institution’s mission is to invest in social and financial capital in vital non-profit organizations.

Kapor was born in Brooklyn, New York to a Jewish family. He was raised in Freeport on Long Island where he graduated high school in 1967. He graduated with a B.A. He graduated from Yale College in 1971, where he studied psychology, linguistics, computer science, and a multidisciplinary major. At the same time, he attended the Boston-based Beacon College, with a satellite campus in Washington, D.C. Although he did not finish his master’s at the MIT Sloan School of Management, he later joined the faculty of the MIT Media Lab as well as the University of California Berkeley School of Information.
