Buonaguro worked as an assistant coach for Rollie Massimino’s national champion 1984-85 Villanova Wildcats men’s basketball team.
From 1985 to 1991, Buonaguro served as Fairfield University’s head coach. His first season saw him coach the Stags to their first MAAC Championship and first berth at the NCAA Tournament, where they faced the Illinois Fighting Illini. He finished the year with a record of 24-7, which is the most wins in school history. His MAAC coaching peers voted him the 1985-86 MAAC Coaches of the Year. Buonaguro was the coach for Fairfield during an injury-plaque season. He helped Fairfield to win its second consecutive MAAC Championship. The Stags also won its second consecutive bid in the NCAA Tournament. In the first round, the Stags were faced by the eventual national champion Indiana Hoosiers.
