Mitchell John Benn, born 20 January 1970, is an English comedian and author. He is also a musician best known for his BBC radio comedy rock songs. He was a regular contributor to BBC Radio 4’s satirical program The Now Show. He has also hosted other radio shows.
Benn has performed many times on BBC Radio 4, where he was a frequent contributor to The Now Show (from 1999 to 2016) and BBC Radio 2’s It’s Been a Bad Week (1900). Jammin’ is another BBC Radio 2 show that Benn contributes to occasionally. He created his own series entitled Mitch Benn’s Crimes Against Music, which featured Robin Ince and Alfie Josephy in 2004. In October 2007, a fifth album, The Official Edinburgh Bootleg 2007 (swiftly dubbed “The Brown Album” because of its mock brown paper cover art), recorded on the final night of his show at the Edinburgh Fringe, was made available exclusively to those who attended his autumn 2007 tour.
Eight CDs have been released by Mitch: The Unnecessary Mitch Benn (1998), a collection of his favourite live songs recorded on a Walkman at gigs that year; Radio Face (2002) which includes material previously heard on Radio 2 & Radio 4; and the Distractions Too Late To Cancel (2004) and Crimes Against Music (2005). As a preview of the album’s release, “Everything Sounds Like Coldplay Now”, was released in September 2005. It reached the lower regions of UK charts. The video (see external link), is still being viewed heavily on Paramount Comedy Channel. Kirsty Newton (vocals, keyboard and bass) and Ivan Sheppard(drums), are The Distractions. They replaced Tash Baylis (also from Weapons) in 2006. Mitch sings most of the songs and plays the guitar. The band supports Mitch Benn in some comedy programmes such as Mitch Benn’s Crimes against Music.

Mitch Benn was born and raised in Liverpool. He attended the Dovedale Primary School (a then all-boys voluntary-aided Liverpool Blue Coat School), and later went on to the University of Edinburgh. There he was a prominent member of Edinburgh University Theatre Company at The Bedlam Theatre, and he performed with the Improverts improvised comedy group. In 1994, he began his comedy career in Edinburgh. He then moved to London in 1996. He quickly became a popular comedian on the university circuit and a headliner at comedy clubs. With his ex-wife Clara, he has two daughters, Greta (born November 2005) and Astrid (2008).
Mitch Benn won in 1995 the Best New Comedian award at Glastonbury Festival. He has been playing there ever since.
