Mitakeumi Hisashi is one of the most popular and richest Rikishi who was born on December 25, 1992 in Agematsu, Nagano Prefecture, Japan. Mitakeumi was the son of Hisashi Omichi, a Japanese father, and a Filipino mom. He was born 25 December 1992. As a first-grader at an Okuwa sumo tournament, he lost to a smaller opponent. He started in sumo at Agematsu Elementary. He was devastated by the loss and decided to start sumo as a formal sport. He was second in the All Japan Elementary School Sumo Championship Tournament by the end of elementary school. He was ranked in the Top 8 of his peers at national school, Kiso Fukushima Middle School. He was third in National Polity Club at Kiso Aomine High school. After graduating from high school, he attended Toyo University’s Law School.

Mitakeumi won the title with an 11-4 record in his first juro tournament. Since the May 1949 tournament, it had been 66 years that a Nagano wrestler had won the juro tournament. He suffered a loss on the 10th day of the tournament. Jokoryu also gave him a sharp blow to his mouth. However, he was able return the next day to win.

He entered the dohyō for the first time in the March 2015 tournament and was given the name Mitakeumi. His name is taken from a mountain near his hometown of Agematsu named Mount Ontake (御嶽山. 御 can be read as “On” or “Mi”). The “Umi” part of his name comes from his stable, Dewanoumi. Although Mitakeumi suffered his first loss as a professional sumo wrestler to Daishōhō in his second bout of the tournament, this helped relieve tension, and he was able to finish with a strong 6-1 winning record. This propelled him to the rank of east makushita

3 in the next tournament where he got another 6–1 record and advanced to the

second highest (jūryō) division of sumo in the July tournament. He became only the 11th wrestler promoted to jūryō after only two tournaments.

At Toyo University he became a powerful pusher thruster and earned 15 titles in sumo. In his fourth year at university in November he became a university yokozuna, then went on to become an amateur yokozuna in December. Attaining the rank of amateur yokozuna earned him the right to start as a professional at the rank of makushita 10. He had initially not intended to enter the professional ranks, but instead to work for the Wakayama Prefectural government. However he was convinced by the former Oginohana, the 11th generation stable master at Dewanoumi stable to help revive the fortunes of his stable, and so joined the stable on February 12, 2015. He became the first new student of the stablemaster, who had just taken over from his predecessor (former sekiwake Washūyama).

On his debut in the top division, he won an 8-7 record. He was ill with the flu in January 2016, which led to his first loss in the top division. However, he continued his tournament strong with two strong performances, 10-5 and 11-4. In May 2016, he won his first special prize, a fighting spirit prize. In the November 2016 tournament, he made his san’yaku debut at Komusubi. He had to play everyone in the top 8 positions for the first week, losing 7 of those first 8 days. He only managed 6 wins, and was 6-9 at the end. Overall, 2016 was a successful year for Mitakeumi. He won three tournaments with double- digit wins and made it to komusubi. He also won his first prize and was the 53rd recipient of the annual ChuSpo “best makuuchi novice” award.

Mitakeumi Hisashi (Japanese Yu Yue Hai Jiu Si, born December 25, 1992, as Hisashi Omichi, Da Dao Jiu Si)) is a professional sumo wrestler from Japan, Agematsu, Nagano. He is part of the Dewanoumi stable. He is a pusher thruster type wrestler. He was an amateur champion at Toyo University and made his professional debut in March 2015. He reached the top makuuchi division that year in November 2015. Six special prizes were awarded to him for Fighting Spirit, Technique, Outstanding Performance and two gold stars for beating a yokozuna. Sekiwake is his highest rank. His first championship in top division (yusho), was won in July 2018, and his second in September 2019.

Although there was speculation that Mitakeumi might be promoted to ozeki after another strong performance in September, he lost five consecutive bouts from Days 8-12 and finished with a 9-6 record. After a November make-koshi record of 7-8, he lost his rank as a sekiwake. However, he started the January 2019 tournament with five consecutive wins and then was injured in a defeat to Myogiryu on Day 6. He was forced to miss Days 7-10 due to injury and returned to play on Day 11, defeating Hakuho. This gave the yokozuna its first loss of the tournament. He won eight matches and received the Outstanding Performance Award. He was the first wrestler to win one since 1947, when special prizes were established. He maintained his komusubi status despite a March performance of 7-8 and a May win with nine victories in sekiwake. He was able to enter the next tournament in San’yaku with nine more wins in July.

Mitakeumi fought for the first time in the makuuchi division while in jūryō on Day 14 of the September 2015 tournament. He finished with a 12–3 record at the rank of jūryō #5 at this tournament and was promoted to the makuuchi division for the November tournament in Kyushu. He became the first wrestler to enter the top (makuuchi) division from Nagano prefecture since Ōwashi retired from sumo in January 1978 (this period of 37 years was the current longest amongst all the prefectures). It had also been 47 years since a wrestler from Nagano reached the rank of jūryō (Ōwashi in 1968).
