Melissa Giove, born 1972, is an American professional downhill mountain biking champion. The Missile is her nickname. Giove was a mountain-bike racing’s first mainstream star. She appeared on Late Night with Conan O’Brien as well as in Reebok ads. She won 11 world cups and 14 NORBA downhill titles throughout her career. Giove also won three overall NORBA Downhill titles, two World Cup overalls and the 1994 World Championship title.

Giove was inducted in the Mountain Bike Hall of Fame (2016) and an honorary inductee in the Italian Hall of Fame (2017).

Her racing style resulted in a double accident at a race in Vail Colorado in 2001. After suffering severe pain for several months, she decided to try marijuana. After her sponsor money stopped, she needed more money from another source to smuggle marijuana. Giove was charged with conspiring to possess and distribute 384 lbs of marijuana in Wilton, New York, June 2009. Giove pleaded guilty. She was sentenced on November 23rd 2011 to time served, six month home detention, and five years of supervised freedom. Because she saw smuggling as the distribution and enjoyment of happiness, she didn’t see it as a major issue.

Missy began racing for Yeti in the early days, alongside Myles Rockwell and Jimmy Deaton. John Tomac, Johnny O’Mara and Johnny Tomac were also involved. This was to prove that Kristen, her husband, could return to racing.
