Min Ko Naing Biography

Birthday Oct 18
Birth Year 1962

Min Ko Naing is one of the most popular and richest Politician who was born on October 18, 1962 in Mudon, Myanmar. Min Ko Naing was forced to hide and continued organizing, while moving house to house each night in an effort to avoid arrest. He was eventually captured with several other students after several months. For inciting “disturbances of law and order to the detriment to peace and tranquility”, he was sentenced to 20 year imprisonment under Section 5(j), 1950 Emergency Provisions Act. In January 1993, his sentence was reduced to 10 years by a general amnesty. Amnesty International considered him a prisoner for conscience and fought hard to get his release.

Amnesty International claims that Min Ko Naing suffered severe torture and was ill-treated in the initial stages of his imprisonment. As a result, his health was affected. His left foot was completely numb after he was forced to stand in water for 2 weeks during his interrogation. After being held for 15 years, he was released on 19 November 2004.

Min Ko Naing was rearrested in late September 2006. Htay Kywe, Ko Ko Gyi, Pyone Cho and Min Zeya were arrested along with him, in advance of Burma’s 2006 national convention. In January 2007, they were released, without official explanation for either their original arrest or their sudden release.

He was arrested again around midnight on 21 August 2007, with other 13 leaders of the 88 Generation Students for organizing peaceful demonstrations. United States Government condemned the Burmese junta’s arrest of them. On 11 November 2008 Min Ko Naing was sentenced to 65 years imprisonment, as 22 others had been for their role in the August 2007 demonstrations. On 15 November 2008 Min Ko Naing was transferred to Kengtung prison in Shan State, where isolated, bleak cells were constructed in mid-2000 for solitary confinement.

The general strike of 8-8-88 brought hundreds of thousands to Yangon and was widely regarded as a turning point for the Burmese democracy movement. Min Ko Naing continued speaking to the crowds in front the Rangoon General hospital and the US Embassy, which are the locations of earlier killings of protesters by the Burmese government forces. Aung San Suu Kyi’s daughter, independence hero Aung San, was also invited to give her first speech before a crowd at Shwedagon pagoda. Aung San Suu Kyi would be elected prime minister in 1990’s general election. However, she was denied the office and placed in prison by the State Law and Order Restoration Council.
