Milton Scott May, born August 1, 1950, is an American former professional baseball coach. From 1970 to 1984, he was a Major League Baseball catcher for the Pittsburgh Pirates and Houston Astros. He also played for the Chicago White Sox and Detroit Tigers.
May was traded to Detroit and played six games before his broken ankle ended him for the 1976 season. In 1977, May was able to record 12 double plays as well as 0 passed balls. May was paired with Lance Parrish in 1978. Parrish was the Tigers’ regular catcher by 1979 and May was traded to Chicago White Sox. After just one year in Chicago, May signed as a free agent with the San Francisco Giants. May scored the 9000th run in Giants history on June 13, 1980 during a 3-1 victory over the New York Mets. John Montgomery Ward was the first to hit home runs in 1883. Bobby Bonds hit the 8,000th on September 4, 1971. He batted.310 in 1981, which was the highest Giants catcher mark.
May became a coach for the Pirates in 1987, serving under manager Jim Leyland. He was major-league hitting coach for ten seasons in Pittsburgh (1987–96) and two with the Florida Marlins (1997–98). He spent the first half of the 1999 season with the Tampa Bay Devil Rays and was later named a pitching coach for the Colorado Rockies. May was a scout for the Rockies in 2000, then spent the 2001 season as a Pirates minor-league hitting coordinator.”
In February 2019, May was named hitting coach for the Orioles of the Gulf Coast League.
May was traded to Houston Astros in exchange for Jerry Reuss after the 1973 season. He was the Astros’ starting catcher and replaced Johnny Edwards. In 1974, he was the National League’s top catcher with a.993 fielding rate. May was the National League’s top catcher in 1975, with 70 assists and 47 baserunners caught cheating. In 1975, he was also charged for 18 passed balls by the Astros. They had Joe Niekro as a knuckleballer on their staff. May brought Bob Watson to Major League Baseball’s 1,000,000th run on May 4, 1975.

Milt May was chosen by the Pittsburgh Pirates, a Florida team out of St. Petersburg High School as an infielder (237) in the 1968 Major League Baseball Draft. He then became a catcher. He was an excellent pitcher’s catcher and was also a left-handed line drive hitter. However, he was known to be the slowest runner in major league baseball for most of his career.
May, aged 21, was part of the 1971 World Series winning Pirates team. His pinch-hit single in Game Four, which was in the seventh inning of that series, drove in Bob Robertson to score the winning run and give the Pirates a 4-3 victory. The Pirates were struck by tragedy in 1972 when Roberto Clemente, outfielder, was killed in an airplane crash. Clemente was to be replaced by May in the Pirates’ lineup of 1973. Manny Sanguillen moved to right field. The experiment was ended in July after it was discovered that Sanguillen was unable to adjust to playing outfield. May was then back on the Pirates bench.
In August 1983, the Giants traded him back to the Pirates for catcher Steve Nicosia. May retired as a player after the 1984 season.
