Milan Zver, a Slovenian politician and Member in the European Parliament (MEP), was born 25 May 1962. He is a member the Slovenian Democratic Party (part of the European People’s Party). He is Vice-President of Slovenian Democratic Party. From 2004 to 2008, he was Minister of Education and Sports.

Zver was elected to Slovenia’s National Assembly in 2004 during the parliamentary elections. Zver resigned from the Parliament soon afterward to become the Minister for Education and Sports under Janez Jansa’s centre-right government. He was also the chairman of the Commission for the Improvement of the Conditions of the Romani Community in Slovenia from 2007 to 2007.

As the Minister of Sports, he attended the opening ceremony of the 2008 Summer Olympics as the representative for Slovenia.

In 2009, he was chosen to head the Slovenian Democratic Party’s list of candidates to the European Parliament. The list obtained the highest procentage of votes in Slovenia, while Zver received the highest number of preferential votes in the country, resulting in the election to the European Parliament.

Zver received his PhD from the University of Ljubljana in 1998 under Janko Prunk, a historian. In the same year, Zver began teaching sociology at Maribor University. He is the author of numerous articles and monographs on political analysis and history.

Zver was born in Ljubljana in FPR Yugoslavia. However, he spent his childhood in Destrnik, eastern Slovenian Region of Styria. After graduating from high school in Ptuj he entered the University of Ljubljana to study sociology and political science at Faculty of Social Sciences. Under the guidance of Horst Haselsteiner, he graduated in 1987. He continued his studies at Graz University. In 1990, he received his MA. However, in 1992, he decided to leave the research at the university and take up public service in Slovenia. Zver, a member of the Slovenian Social Democratic Party, served as an advisor to Joze Pucnik, the Deputy Prime Minister, and later the Minister of Defence Janez Jasa. Zver was a secretary of Ljubljana’s Municipal Council from 1994 to 1999. He later served as advisor to the Slovenian Democratic Party (now the Slovenian Social Democratic Party) in its parliamentary group. He was a member of the Municipal Council of Ljubljana from 2002 to 2004.

Zver has served as an advisor and member of various executive bodies of Slovenian Democratic Party (SDS), since 1992. He is the current vice president of SDS. He is also active in the international political scene, mainly within the European People’s Party as well as conservative think tanks like the International Republican Institute or the Konrad Adenauer Foundation.

After the victory of the left-wing coalition led by Borut Pahor in the 2008 parliamentary elections, Zver was replaced by Igor Lukšič as Minister of Education of Sports.
