He began his career at the Faculty of Social, Political Sciences and Journalism in 1992 as a Teaching Assistant at Chair of International Relations. This course covered Politics of International Law, Diplomatic and Conciliar Relations, and International Relations. He was made Assistant Professor in 2007 and course holder of Diplomatic, Consular Relations, Theory of International Relations and Selected Issues of International Law. He was appointed Head of the Department of International Relations at the Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Ljubljana in 2008.
Brglez joined the Party of Miro Cerar in 2014 and entered national politics. In 2015, the party was renamed to Modern Centre Party. He was vice-president of the party. Brglez was elected as vice president of the party at the July 2014 parliamentary elections. SMC won plurality, with 36 seats out of 90. He was elected Speaker of the National Assembly on August 1st, succeeding Janko Vesel of the Social Democrats.
Following the 2019 European election in May 2019, he became a Member of the European Parliament from Slovenia on the list of Social Democrats. He is a member of the Committee on Employment and Social Affairs, and substitute member of the Committee on the Environment, Public Health and Food Safety.
