Mikhail Gutseriyev Biography

Mikhail Gutseriyev is one of the most popular and richest Politician who was born on March 9, 1958 in Nur-Sultan, Soviet Union. Saad Gutseriev was his paternal grandfather and was born in Vladikavkaz in 1882. He crossed the Cross Pass at nine years old and moved to Tbilisi (Georgian). He attended a secondary school that was not of the traditional type, was trained by the Special Gendarme Corps, Russian Imperial Army, and was later educated in law. Saad Gutseriev was a Commissary for Western Georgia and Sukhumi. He moved to Vladikavkaz during this period, where he managed a business that owned the starch distilling and starch factories. Saad Gutseriev was promoted to management in several enterprises of the Commissariat of Local Industry after the Russian Revolution. Saad Gutseriev was arrested in 1944. His house was taken and his entire family exiled to Kazakhstan. He remained there until his death in 1948. Today, Astana’s most modern and chic hotel, built with funds from the Gutserievs, is named after Saad-Mariott, Gutserievs grandfather.

Mikail (Mikhail), Safarbekovich Gutseriev (Russian name Mikhail Safarbekovich Gutseriev; born 9 March 1958, Akmolinsk SSR, Soviet Union), is an Ingush entrepreneur and doctor of economics, poet, and member of the Union of Writers of the Russian Federation. SAFMAR Group’s major shareholder includes JSC RussNeft, JSC Neftisa and JSC Russian Coal. JSC Mospromstroy is JSC NPF Safmar. JSC Doveriye, NPF Mospromstroy-Fund. JSC “LC” “Europlan”, VSK insurance company, and many other. He holds controlling stakes in two of the most important Russian retail companies – PJSC Eldorado and JSC M.video. GCM Global Energy Inc. is based in the UK and produces crude oil for Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan and other countries. He is the owner of major real estate assets, including the National Hotel, Petrovsky Passage, and Smolensky Passage shopping centers in Moscow. The Management Board of Russian Union of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs is composed of Mr. Gutseriev.

From 1982 Gutseriev worked as a process engineer, later on – as a senior process engineer of Grozny Production Association at the RSFSR Ministry of Local Industry, Grozny. It took him only four years to advance from a process engineer to the CEO of the Association, having become the youngest CEO among managers of manufacturing enterprises of the USSR. In 1988 Mikhail Gutseriev founded a Russian-Italian joint venture, the first one in the Northern Caucasus, the CHIITAL furniture factory. He also became a pioneer of private banking business in the USSR: in the same year, he founded “Kavkaz”, one of the first cooperative banks in this country. In 1991, Gutseriev was elected Chairman of Businessmen Association of Checheno-Ingush ASSR.

Mikhail Gutseriev is married and has two sons and two daughters. He has been divorced twice, but has custody over his ex-wife’s children, Linda and Vadim. His elder son Chingiz, born in 1986, died after car accident in 2007.

Mikhail Gutseriev was conceived in Akmolinsk, 9 March 1958. His family was exiled to Kazakhstan after it was suppressed. He graduated from high school No. 23 in Grozny, Checheno-Ingushskaya ASSR. In 2005, the school was completely destroyed by the First Chechen War. Gutseriev’s financial support enabled it to be rebuilt.

Mikhail Gutseriev’s father, Safarbek Saadovich was born in 1920. He graduated from Law School in 1941 and graduated from North Ossetian State University in 1971 with an Economics of Trade degree. He served in the prosecutorial offices during World War II and was the head of the district prosecutor’s bureau at 23. Safarbek Gutseriev was a senior investigator in special cases of Akmolinsk Regional Administrative of the Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs after the 1944 deportation of Ingush citizens to Kazakhstan. He was unlawfully detained and sentenced in 1948 to 25 years imprisonment, followed by a 5-year exile settlement. “My father sent two letters to Stalin every day for seven years. One was from his own name. One was signed by my mother. The other was written by his friend, a convict. Mikhail Gutseriev recalls that my father sent more than 5 000 letters. Safarbek Gutseriev, half a year after Stalin’s passing, was released and reinstated in the Party. He was then fully rehabilitated in 1955. He held various managerial positions at a regional level after the War: Head of Production and Processing Equipment Agency in Tselinstroy, Head Construction and Erection Directorate and a number of industrial and retail businesses. He received 11 state awards.

In 1975 Gutseriev started his labor activity as a loader, working for an import company in Grozny. From 1976 he worked as a reel operator of a silkscreening workshop at the Dzhambul Factory of Folk Arts and Crafts, then till 1982 – as a supervising foreman of a sewing workshop at the same factory. Simultaneously he studied at the evening department of the Chemical Processing Faculty of the Institute of Technology, Dzhambul, Kazakh SSR, majoring in “Leather and Furs”.
