Mikhail Fridman is one of the most popular and richest Entrepreneur who was born on April 21, 1964 in Lviv, Ukraine. Fridman was born 1964 in Lviv in Ukraine, USSR. He grew up there. In 1980, he graduated from Lviv’s high school. Because of his Jewish heritage, he was not allowed to attend Moscow’s top Physics college. Instead, he attended the Moscow Institute of Steel and Alloys. While a college student in Moscow he worked in a variety of jobs, including cleaning windows and co-owning Strawberry Fields student discotheque. A group of students he led would wait in line for tickets to popular Moscow plays and use the tickets as hard currency for bartering rare goods or favours. He graduated from the Moscow Institute of Steel and Alloys with distinction in 1986 after he studied metallurgical engineering.

In January 1991, Fridman founded Alfa-Bank using $100,000 from his business profits to pay the required fee. It grew to be one of Russia’s largest private banks. Alfa Group later divisions include Rosvodokanal (a private water utility); AlfaStrakhovanie (a diversified insurance company); A1 Group (an investment company); and X5 Retail Group which is a large chain food retailers.

Alfa Group flourished considerably after Fridman recruited Petr Aven, the former Minister of Foreign Economic Relations for the Russian Federation; in 1994 Aven became President and Chairman of Alfa Bank. By late 1996, thanks to the success of Alfa Bank and Alfa Group, Boris Berezovsky, in an interview by the Financial Times, named Fridman and Aven as among the seven businessman and bankers who controlled most of the economy and media in Russia, and who had helped bankroll Boris Yeltsin’s 1996 re-election campaign.

Fridman’s Alfa Group founded the Perekrestok (also transliterated Perekriostok) chain of supermarkets in Moscow in 1995. Through a merger with the Pyatyorochka (also transliterated Pyaterochka) supermarket chain, which had been founded in St. Petersburg in 1999 by Alexander Girda and Andrey Rogachev, Alfa Group founded the X5 Retail Group in 2006. X5 acquired another grocer, Kopeyka, for $1.65 billion in December 2010. X5 is Russia’s largest food retailer in terms of sales.

Together with German Khan, Alexey Kuzmichev and Fridman, Fridman founded Alfa- Photo in 1988. This company imported photo chemicals. The three partners formed Alfa-Eco in 1989 (Alfa-Echo. Alfa-Eko. Alfa-Ekho). This was a trading and investment company that traded commodities. Alfa-Eco and Alfa Capital became Alfa Group Consortium. Although the company was initially focused on computer trading and maintenance of copy machines, it grew into commodities trading and imports and exports. It eventually became one of Russia’s largest private financial-industrial conglomerates.

Mikhail Maratovich Fridman, also known as Mikhail Friedman in Russian; Russian: Mikhail Maratovich Fridman, was born 21 April 1964. He is a Russian business magnate. He is also a citizen of Israel. He was also the co-founder of Alfa-Group, a multi-national Russian conglomerate. Forbes reports that he was the seventh-richest Russian in 2017. He was also ranked by bne IntelliNews as Russia’s most influential businessman in May 2017.

From 1986 to 1988, Fridman was employed as a metallurgical designer engineer at Elektrostal Metallurgical Works. This is a state-owned electrical machinery manufacturing plant. In 1988, Russian politician Mikhail Gorbachev opened the economy. Fridman started a window-washing company, an apartment rental agency, and a company selling used computers. He also established a company that imported cigarettes, perfumes, and sold used computers.

In 1991 he co-founded Alfa-Bank, which is one of the largest private banks in Russia. After serving as CEO of TNK-BP, the 50/50 TNK-BP joint venture, for nine years, in 2013 he sold his stake in the company and co-founded the international investment company LetterOne (L1), headquartered in Luxembourg. Fridman currently sits as chairman of the supervisory board of Alfa Group Consortium, and he is also on the boards of Alfa-Bank and ABH Holdings, which is the Luxembourg-based holding company of Alfa Banking Group.

Fridman is a member of numerous public facing bodies, including the National Council on Corporate Governance in Russia and a boardmember of the Russian Union of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs.
