Mikhail Botvinov is one of the most popular and richest Cross-Country Skier who was born on November 17, 1967 in Tyoplo-Ogaryovsky District, Russia. Mikhail Viktorovich Botvinov (Russian name Mikhail Viktorovich Botvinov) was a Russian-born Austrian cross country skier. He competed for Russia from 1990 to 2007, as well as Austria since 1997.
He was awarded two medals at Winter Olympics, a silver in the 30 km freestyle mass-start event for men in 2002 and bronze in the 50 km freestyle mass-start for men in 2006. (Both for Austria). He competed in the 1992 Winter Olympics for Russia and in the 1994 Winter Olympics for Russia.
Botvinov immigrated from Russia to Austria 1996. He was then forced to miss the 1996-97 FIS World Cup Season as well as the 1998 Winter Olympics Nagano to clarify his citizenship status. However, he returned to form in 1998. His 2002 blood doping scandal with Christian Hoffmann was also a source of controversy for Botvinov. However, both were cleared by International Olympic Committee on April 9, 2002.

He won three medals at the FIS Nordic Ski Championships. In 1993, he won a bronze medal for Russia in the 4×10 km relay. He represented Austria and won a gold medal in the 4×10 km relay in 1999.
Botvinov won the Holmenkollen Ski Festival’s 50km event in 1999. He was the first Austrian to win this prestigious cross-country event. Two years prior, he won the Vasaloppet Swedish event.
Botvinov retired after the 2006–07 World Cup season.
