Vail’s first season with the Mets, Vail blasted.342, scoring seven home runs and 79 RBIs. This earned him the 1975 International League “Player-of-the Year” award. In August, he was called up to major leagues and received a pinch hit from Houston Astros ace J. R. Richard. This was his first major league bat. Vail was 2-for-5 against San Francisco Giants on August 22. Three days later Vail was 4-for-4 against the San Francisco Giants with two doubles and an RBI. In his ninth inning, he was intentionally walked. He went on to set a modern Major League rookie record of 23 games. Vail batting.364 over the course of the streak with three home runs and fifteen RBIs.
After batting .143 during Spring training 1978, he was placed on waivers, and selected by the Cleveland Indians. He began the season in the minors, however, injuries soon opened up a major league roster spot. In his American League debut, Vail went 2-for-2, including a game winning, walk-off hit in the ninth. Despite this early success, Vail saw limited use during his time in Cleveland. On June 15, he was dealt to the Chicago Cubs for fellow outfielder Joe Wallis.
In 1979, in a platoon with left handed hitting Scot Thompson in right field, Vail batted .335 with seven home runs & 35 RBIs. Herman Franks called Vail a “constant whiner who made him sick” when he resigned as manager of the Cubs with seven games remaining on their schedule. “I just got tired of being around him. There isn’t enough money in the world to pay me to manage if I have to look at that face every day.”
Vail started 1977 slowly, batting.200 with only three RBIs and no home runs. He hit his first homerun since September 8, 1975 on May 2. After a slow start, he batted.200 with three RBIs and no home runs through May 1. For much of the season, he batted above.300, but his average dropped to.262 in August (.159 avg. 2 HR, 5 RBI) and September (.191avg. 0 HR. 1 RBI). He also had a career- high eight home runs and 35 RBIs.

Vail was originally drafted by Los Angeles Dodgers in round seventeen of the 1970 Major League Baseball draft. He was a senior at Archbishop Michael Mitty High School, San Jose, California. He declined, choosing, instead, to attend De Anza College. He was selected by the St. Louis Cardinals in the fourth round, January 1971 secondary draft.
Vail slugged.256 in his three first seasons with the Cardinals’ farm team. He had 27 home runs and 158 runs. His fourth season of professional baseball was split equally between the Class A Modesto Reds and the Double A Arkansas Travelers. Vail batted.334 in 1974 with 15 home runs and 76 RBIs. He and shortstop Jack Heidemann were traded to the New York Mets in exchange for Ted Martinez, an infielder.
Vail did not return to the Mets until mid-June 1976, and saw just limited use through the end of the month. He assumed his starting job in right field in July, but batted just .190 with one RBI. He began hitting in the beginning of August, but soon fell off, and ended the season with a .217 batting average, nine RBIs & no home runs in nineteen fewer at bats than the previous season.
