Turzai was elected to the U.S. House as the 4th District representative against Ron Klink, the incumbent Democratic member. With 54.25% of votes to David F. Miller’s 24,.45% and Paul Adametz’s 21.26% respectively, Turzai won the Republican primary. However, Klink defeated him in the general election 64-36%.
In 2001 he was elected to the Pennsylvania House, winning every precinct in the 28th district against attorney Thomas Dancison in a special election to fill the seat of Jane Orie, who had replaced Melissa Hart in the state Senate in 2000.
On April 1, 2008, Turzai voted against an amendment to HB 1845 (Reporting Missing Firearms). The amendment would have made it a summary offense, first degree misdemeanor, and then a third-degree felony (for each subsequent violation) for a person to fail to report a lost or stolen firearm to law enforcement within three days of discovering it missing.
Turzai served as an assistant district attorney in Allegheny County between 1988 and 1992. He then joined Houston Harbaugh (a Pittsburgh law firm). Through 2004, he was an assistant district attorney for Allegheny County. He is still Of counsel to Houston Harbaugh.

Michael Coyne Turzai, a Republican member of Pennsylvania’s House of Representatives, is the current Speaker of the House. He was born August 2, 1959. He hails from Allegheny County, and has been representing the 28th congressional district since 2001. His district includes Franklin Park, Franklin Park, Bradford Woods and Warrendale. From 2011 to 2014, Turzai was the House Majority leader and was elected Speaker in February 2015. From 2011 to 2014, Turzai was the House Majority Leader. He was elected Speaker in January 2015.
Turzai was born at Sewickley in Pennsylvania. He was raised in Moon Township, and attended Our Lady of the Sacred Heart high school in Coraopolis. He received a B.A. He earned a B.A. in English at the University of Notre Dame in 1982 and a law degree at Duke University in 1987.
Prior to serving in the legislature, Turzai served as the vice president of the Bradford Woods Borough Council. He was also a former representative to the Republican State Committee in 2000.
