Mike Shildt, born August 9, 1968, is an American baseball manager for Major League Baseball’s St. Louis Cardinals. Shildt was promoted to the position of manager of the Johnson City Cardinals, a Cardinals Short Season A affiliate in 2009 and also took on scouting duties. In 2011, he was promoted to the position of manager for the Cardinals AA affiliate, Springfield Cardinals. After the firing of Mike Matheny, he joined the major league coaching staff and was promoted to manager of the Springfield Cardinals AA affiliate in 2011. He won his first managerial victory in a 6-4 win over the Cincinnati Reds on July 15, 2018. He led his team to a 13-1 win over the Atlanta Braves on October 9, 2019 to win the NLDS.

Shildt began his Major League Baseball career in the league as an associate scout for three seasons. He was the Cardinals’ area scout in North Carolina, South Carolina, and Virginia, after which he moved to the Cardinals. John Mozeliak, the future Cardinals general manager, recommended that Shildt begin his coaching career in minor leagues as a part time coach. Shildt was assigned to the Cardinals’ Single A affiliate in the New York Penn League. He served as a part-time coach in 2004 and 2005 while also continuing his scouting duties. In 2006, he was promoted to a full time coaching position. He continued coaching the A affiliate through the 2007 season. Shildt was the Cardinals’ minor-league spring training workout coordinator in 2008. He was named the hitting coach of the Johnson City Cardinals in 2008 after that.

Shildt won his 100th game as Cardinals manager with a 6–2 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates on August 9, 2019, his 51st birthday. Following a 3–2 win over the Chicago Cubs on September 22, 2019, the Cardinals clinched a playoff berth for the first time in Shildt’s career as manager, and the first for the team since 2015.

Shildt managed the Springfield Cardinals (AA), for three seasons. Shildt led Springfield to the Texas League Championship, before it was named Baseball America’s Team-of-the Year in 2012.

In 2009, Shildt was promoted as Johnson City manager. When José Oquendo was brought back for the 2018 season to be the St. Louis Cardinals third base coach, Shildt became the team’s bench coach for the 2018 season. On July 14, 2018, Shildt was made interim manager of the Cardinals following the firing of Mike Matheny. He became only the eighth man to manage a Major League Baseball team despite not having ever played professional baseball at any level. Bob Nightengale of USA Today tweeted on August 28, 2018 that the team would remove the interim tag from Shildt’s title and name him the club’s permanent manager, awarding him a 3-year contract.
