Mike Rumbles, a Scottish Liberal Democrat MSP in North East Scotland was born 10 June 1956. He was previously a representative of West Aberdeenshire and Kincardine. He was defeated in the 2011 election in Aberdeenshire West.

Rumbles announced again on 2 July 2008 that he would stand for the Scottish Liberal Democrat leader after Stephen’s sudden resignation. He reiterated his determination to review party policy regarding whether to hold a referendum on Scottish Independence (the Scottish National Party’s policy). He was up against former Ministers Ross Finnie, Tavish Scott and others. Scott won comfortably the contest.

Rumbles declared his intention to run for the post of leader of Scottish Liberal Democrats on 12 May 2005. Rumbles’ candidacy was markedly different from that of his opponent, Nicol Stephen. He outlined a few ‘deal-breakers” for any possible coalition negotiations following the 2007 Scottish Parliament election. However, he insisted on the implementation key Liberal Democrat policies like the abolition or enhancement of the powers of the Scottish parliament. He also sought to give the Liberal Democrats a better position within the coalition. Stephen won 23.4% of his vote in June 2005 and he lost to him.

He held the seat comfortably in the 2003 and 2007 elections but was defeated in 2011 by the SNP. Rumbles became Convenor of Standards Committee in 1999 after the establishment of the Scottish Parliament. This was when he was charged with investigating the so called ‘Lobbygate’ scandal in which John Reid, the son of then Secretary of State for Scotland, was implicated. He was the advocate for the legislation to create an independent Standards Commissioner. This was the first Committee Bill.
