Rivera was put on waivers by Padres. He was then selected by the Chicago White Sox June 9, 2003. They assigned Rivera to the Triple-A Charlotte Knights. Rivera started the 2004 season in Charlotte, where he slugged.100 in 11 games. He was again selected from waivers by the Oakland Athletics on April 22. In 2004, he played for the Triple-A A’s team, the Sacramento River Cats. He slugged.224 in 49 games.
On December 22, 2009, Rivera signed a minor league contract with the New York Yankees. On April 3, 2010, before the season began, he was released when the Yankees signed Chad Moeller to be their backup catcher for the Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees.
In 2008, he was again promoted to the majors as a backup for Jason Kendall, and also played first base occasionally. Rivera was an undergraduate at Troy State University, where he was an All-Star in the Mid-Continent Conference Eastern Division. In 1997, Rivera was signed as an amateur-free agent by the Detroit Tigers. Rivera began that season playing for the Rookie League Gulf Coast League Tigers. He batting.286 over 47 games. In 1998, he played for the Class-A West Michigan Whitecaps. He played most of 1999 with the Class A-Advanced Lakeland Tigers but also played for the Double A Jacksonville Suns. He played with the Triple-A Toledo Mud Hens in Jacksonville and Lakeland again in 2000. Rivera spent the 2001 season playing with the Double-A Erie SeaWolves. He was called up to the majors in Sept. Rivera was a Gulf Coast League All-Star 1997, a Florida State League All-Star 1999, and an Eastern League All-Star 2001.
As a late-inning defensive replacement, he made his major league debut for the Tigers on September 18, 2001 against the Minnesota Twins. He was hitless in four at bats his first time out against the Boston Red Sox on September 22. His first major league hit was on September 27 against Kansas City Royals. It was a single to left-field off Mike MacDougal. He played in four games that season for the Tigers, and 39 more in 2002. On April 4, he scored his first home run of his career against the Tampa Bay Devil Rays. He spent the second half of 2002 with Triple-A Toledo.
He began the 2005 season with the Atlantic City Surf of the Independent Atlantic League but shortly signed with the Milwaukee Brewers as a free agent. He played the rest of the season with the Triple-A Nashville Sounds. His 2006 playing time was split between Nashville and Milwaukee. He served as the Brewers’ backup to Damian Miller, then as a starter at the end of the season. With Miller returning in 2007, and the acquisition of Johnny Estrada from the Arizona Diamondbacks, Rivera began the season with Nashville, but also played in 11 games for Milwaukee. On June 25, 2007, he caught a perfect game with Sounds batterymate Manny Parra.
