Mike Pegues, an American basketball coach, was born January 13, 1978. He is currently the assistant for the University of Louisville basketball team. However, he is best known for his playing career at Delaware. He was a three- time First Team All-America East Conference selection, and was the league’s player-of-the-year in 1998-99.
After several seasons, a knee injury ended his playing career. He became a teacher at Friendship Collegiate Academy Public Charter School. He was also an Amateur Athletic Union and high school basketball coach. Pegues was the Virginia Commonwealth video coordinator from 2009-10. He then joined the Delaware staff in 2010-11. Pegues was appointed as the assistant coach at Xavier by Chris Mack in 2012.
Pegues was not selected in 2000 NBA Draft, but he did make a successful professional career, which took him to Italy and New Zealand, as well as the Continental Basketball Association in the United States.

Pegues was a 6-foot, 240-lb forward from Forestville. He played at DeMatha Catholic high school from 1992 to 1996. Pegues was also a former Philadelphia Eagles running back Brian Westbrook’s teammate. Morgan Wootten, a Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame Inductee, was his head coach. He had a total record of 105-26, which included two top-ten rankings in Washington, D.C., during his four-year highschool career.
Pegues graduated from DeMatha Catholic High School in 1996. He was awarded a basketball scholarship at the University of Delaware to play under Mike Brey, who is also a DeMatha graduate. Pegues was the first college player to be selected for three all-conference first teams and also the conference player of year during a college career that ran from 1996 to 2000. Pegues scored a Delaware record 2,030 point total and led the Fightin’ Blue Hens in two NCAA Tournaments (1998 and 1999) as well as one National Invitation Tournament ((2000)). Both 1997-98, 1998-99 and 1999-2000 saw Delaware as America East tournament and regular season champions. Pegues averaged 21.8 point per game when he was named America East Conference Player-of-the Year as a junior. He was not the player of the Year again as a senior but his career was so good that he was inducted in the University of Delaware Hall of Fame for 2007.
