He votes with the Republican on committees. We’ve joked for years he needs to come over to the party who thinks like he does.”

Oliverio ran for his former State Senate district as a Republican in 2018, but lost to incumbent Bob Beach.

He was also the co-chair of the American Legislative Exchange Council, along with Jonathan Miller (a Republican). In a speech in 2006, President George W. Bush thanked Oliverio for his help in securing confirmation of Samuel Alito on the United States Supreme Court.

Michael Angelo Oliverio II, born August 6, 1963, is a former State senator for the 13th District and was the Democratic nominee for U.S. Rep. for West Virginia’s 1st congressional districts in 2010. He was previously a member of the West Virginia House of Delegates.

Oliverio was elected in 1992 to the 44th House District (portions Monongalia County). He was elected to the 13th Senate District of West Virginia in 1994. Oliverio was reelected in 1998, 2002 and 2006. He served as chairman of the Labor Committee, vice-chairman and vice-chairman respectively of the Judiciary Committee. Oliverio was also instrumental in a law that allows West Virginia’s state governments to invest in stocks instead of fixed-income securities. Oliverio was not re-elected in 2010 because of his candidacy for Congress. His term was over in January 2011.

On February 1, 2010, Oliverio announced his candidacy for West Virginia’s 1st congressional district seat. He defeated 14-term incumbent Alan Mollohan in the Democratic primary on May 11, 2010. Oliverio lost to David McKinley by an extremely narrow margin. He indicated his concerns about the national debt served as the primary impetus for his campaign. Olivero announced his interest in entering the 2012 Congressional race to face David McKinley, but ultimately decided not to run.
