Mike Morreale, a Hamilton, Ontario native linebacker, and Rob Hitchcock were both released by the Hamilton Tiger-Cats in June 2007. On August 27, 2007, he announced his retirement and joined McMaster University’s football coaching staff. Rob Hitchcock and he were also honored by the Tiger-Cats during a halftime ceremony at the 2007 Labour Day Classic.

Currently, Morreale is the Commissioner and CEO of the Canadian Elite Basketball League (CEBL) which launched in 2019 with 6 teams. In late 2019 the CEBL added its seventh franchise in Ottawa. The CEBL is Canada Basketball’s only licensed professional Men’s Division 1 Pro league. Morreale works as colour analyst for U Sports football and has been the colour analyst for the Hamilton Tiger Cats on TSN1150 since 2018.

He was the CFL spokesperson for the War Amps Champs program, 1997. He also raised $26,000 for Hamilton Children’s Hospital during the 1999 Morreale macaroni campaign. He is also the first cousin of Paul Masotti, Toronto Argonauts legend.

Morreale was a graduate of Cardinal Newman Secondary school, where he won athlete of the Year honours and was voted football MVP twice. He played university football for McMaster University from 1991 to 1994. His Marauder career ended with 116 receptions of 1,880 yards, a school record 16 touchdowns, 217 yards on 27 punt return and 185 yards from nine kickoff returns. He carried the ball four more times for 33 yards, and averaged 33.7 yards per 36 punts. He was a CIAU second-team All-Canadian once, and a two- time OUAA All-Star wide receiver. He was inducted into the McMaster University Football Team of the Century Hall of Fame in 2005.

In 1995, he began his 12-year CFL playing career with the Toronto Argonauts. In 1997, he moved to Hamilton Tiger-Cats and played there for five seasons. He then returned to Toronto in 2002. In 2004, he returned to the Tiger-Cats. He won the CFL’s Most Outstanding Canadian Award in 1998 after he caught 67 passes and ran for 1076 yards. In 1996, he won the Grey Cup with Toronto and 1999 with Hamilton. He was also named the Grey Cup Most Valuable Canadian. Morreale received the Tom Pate award in 2000 for his contributions to the CFL.

Upon his retirement, Morreale became the Canadian Football League Players’ Association (CFLPA) Director of Marketing, before being elected as the ninth President of the CFLPA in 2012, serving until 2014.[1]
