Michael Gregory Marjama, born July 20, 1989, is an American professional baseball pitcher. Before retiring, he played in Major League Baseball’s Seattle Mariners (MLB) in 2017-2018. Marjama was a Long Beach State Dirtbags college baseball player before he began his professional career. He signed a contract in 2019 to play for The Brisbane Bandits of the Australian Baseball League.
Marjama was selected by the Chicago White Sox in the 23rd round. Marjama made his professional debut in 2011 with the Bristol White Sox, a Rookie-level Appalachian League team. He batted.221 and had seven RBIs in 24 games. Marjama was made a catcher by the White Sox in 2012. He started the 2012 season playing in nine games for the Great Falls Voyagers Rookie-level Pioneer League. After that, he was promoted to the Kannapolis Incimidators Class A South Atlantic League. He had a.289 average in batting, with two home runs and 17 RBIs. Marjama was back in Kannapolis in 2013. In Kannapolis’ 97 games, he batted.277 and had six home runs. He also had 46 RBIs that year. In 2014, he played for Winston-Salem Dash in Class A-Advanced Carolina League. He finished the season with an average of.266 in 70 games.
In January 2015, the White Sox traded him to the Tampa Bay Rays for a player to be named later or cash considerations. Marjama played for the Charlotte Stone Crabs of the Class A-Advanced Florida State League in 2015, and compiled a .302 batting average, nine home runs, and 52 RBIs, all career highs. He played for the Montgomery Biscuits of the Class AA Southern League in 2016. He batted .286 with five home runs for the Biscuits.
Marjama was called up to the majors for the first time on September 1, 2017. He hit his first major league home run on October 1, 2017, against the Los Angeles Angels. He batted 3-for-9 (.333) in five games for the Mariners. Marjama competed with David Freitas for the role as backup catcher in spring training in 2018. Marjama made the Mariners’ Opening Day 25-man roster for the 2018 season. Due to an injury to Mike Zunino, Marjama started on Opening Day for the Mariners. When Zunino returned from his injury on April 20, the Mariners optioned Marjama, who had batted 3-for-27 (.111), to Tacoma, while keeping Freitas as Zunino’s backup.
He enrolled at Sacramento City College in order to play on their college baseball team. In his first year, he was a redshirt player and played for the school’s baseball team for two more years. In his two seasons playing for the Sacramento City Panthers he had a.317 average in 74 games, with a.345 average in his second. He played college summer baseball in 2010 for the La Crosse Loggers (Northwoods League). Marjama slugged.286 in 69 games for La Crosse. He also had two home runs and 37 RBIs. Marjama was named an All-Star in the Northwoods League.

Marjama, who was trying to lose weight in high school to wrestle, developed an eating disorder from excessive exercise. His weight dropped to 130 pounds (59kg).
