Gong does occasional reunion gigs all over the globe, and Howlett often joins them. He founded Mauve Records in 1993. It released albums by Jay Fisher, Debbie Cassell, and Rafa Russo. Howlett served as chairman of Music Producers Guild (MPG) from 2005 to 2009.

Howlett was awarded a PhD on the subject of record production in 2009 and has lectured in music technology at several universities, including the University of Glamorgan (now the University of South Wales) (Pontypridd, Wales) and Thames Valley University (Ealing, England). In 2009, he became Head of Music at Queensland University of Technology in Brisbane, Australia. and is an Adjunct Professor for QUT.

Howlett was a highly-respected producer in the 1980s. He has a number of notable credits. He produced many hits singles and albums for top new wave acts, including A Flock of Seagulls (Grammy Winner), The Alarm and China Crisis, Martha & the Muffins Orchestral Manoeuvres In the Dark, Stephen Duffy Gang of Four, and Comsat Angels. In 1985, he also produced Secret Secrets for Joan Armatrading.

Howlett, a bassist in Sydney’s pop band The Affair in the 1960s, was Kerrie Biddell’s vocalist. After winning the Battle of the Sounds contest, the group traveled to England. Howlett settled in London in 1973 and joined the acclaimed British progressive rock band Gong. Gong was founded by Daevid Allen, an Australian expatriate. He recorded several albums with Gong and wrote much of the material with Pierre Moerlen later.

After leaving Gong Howlett founded the band Strontium 90. It consisted of him, Sting and Stewart Copeland. Howlett was the band’s chief songwriter and lead bassist. He also performed the majority of the live vocals. The band recorded demos and performed at the Paris Gong concert in May 1977. However, they disbanded after Summers joined Copeland and Sting’s other venture, The Police. Two decades later, a archival collection of Strontium 90 material released as Strontium 90 – Police Academy.

A few months after the breakup of Strontium 90, Howlett served as bassist for the one-off studio band The Radio Actors, which also included Gong bandmate Steve Hillage on lead guitar and Strontium 90 bandmate Sting (who came to the group by way of Howlett’s recommendation) on lead vocals. The band’s single, “Nuclear Waste” b/w “Digital Love”, was reissued on CD in 1995 with liner notes and three bonus tracks, though none of the bonus tracks involved Howlett.
