Howe started his career singing in a Detroit band called Hellion, which was later renamed Snair after he moved to Los Angeles. He then joined Heretic, who were founded in 1986. Breaking Point was the only full-length album released by Heretic in 1988, before Howe left to join Metal Church. Heretic then disbanded.

Howe was a singer in Metal Church from 1988 to 1996, replacing David Wayne.
