Helms signed with Southland Sharks in April 2010 for the remainder of the 2010 New Zealand NBL Season.
On October 1, 2012, Helms was selected with the fifth overall pick by the Saint John Mill Rats in 2012 NBL Canada draft. He was later traded to the Windsor Express and went to average 17 points per game for the club in 2012–13.
Helms signed a contract with Ironi Ramat Gan, Israel in November 2008 for the 2008-09 season.

Helms signed with the Hunter Pirates in 2005-06 NBL season. He enjoyed a fantastic season, earning All-Star honours and finishing third in scoring with 21.9 per game. He moved to Singapore Slingers in 2006-07 after the franchise’s license was sold. He signed with the Giessen46ers for the remainder of 2006-07 Basketball Bundesliga season. For the 2007-08 season, he signed with the Giessen 46ers.
Helms was not drafted in the 2004 NBA Draft. He then had a brief stint with Argentino de Junin, a Liga Nacional de Basquet. After that, he joined the Michigan Mayhem of CBA. They selected him as the 18th pick of that year’s CBA Draft. Helms scored 15 points on his debut game for Michigan on November 19. He was then injured for the rest of the season. The club reactivated him on January 6, 2005. To complete the season, he played 16 more games for Michigan before joining the Nebraska Cranes in the United States Basketball League (May 2005). Before leaving Nebraska, he played only two games.
In October 2010, Helms joined Toros de Nuevo Laredo of the Liga Nacional de Baloncesto Profesional but managed just 11 games after making his final appearance for the club on November 28, 2011.
