Michael “Mike” Hazle, born March 22, 1979 in Conroe (Texas), is an American Olympian and National Champion (American javelin thrower). Mike is also an ex- combat controller (CCT) for the United States Air Force Special Operations Command, (AFSOC). He was a four-time silver medalist in the US outdoor championships (2007 to 2010), before he won his first National Championship. He was also awarded a silver medal in his division at the 2007 Pan American Games, Rio de Janeiro.

Hazle, who placed third at the Qatar Athletic Super Grand Prix, Doha, Qatar in 2008, set a personal record of 82.21 meters. He reaffirmed his U.S. Olympic Trials runner-up finish. He was a runner-up at the U.S. Outdoor National Championships and also at the U.S. Olympic Trials. His throw of 75.76m earned him a spot on Team USA for the Olympics.

After retiring from professional athletics, Hazle enlisted in the United States Navy SEALs. In 2012 he was awarded a Navy SEAL officer billet for BUD/s for fiscal year 2013 but lost the billet after the United States budget sequestration in 2013. Hazle then enlisted as a US Air Force Special Operations Command Combat Controller.

Hazle was a member the U.S. track & field team in the men’s javelin throw at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing. He competed alongside Breaux Greer, Leigh Smith, and Leigh Smith. His second attempt was 72.75m. However, he fell short of the 12-man final. He placed twenty-fifth during the qualifying rounds.

Hazle is a Conroe native. He started his sporting career at Temple High School as a baseball and football enthusiast. He attended Texas State University, San Marcos, Texas. There he played baseball and football for three years before sustaining a knee injury that ended his playing career. Don Hood, his mentor and longtime friend convinced him to take up track and field. Hazle competed in the decathlon at first, but he eventually decided to focus on the javelin throw as it was his favorite event. He was able to qualify for the 2002 NCAA and U.S. Outdoor championships where he set personal records of 67.56 metres and 70.66 meters, respectively. Hazle also holds a bachelor’s in exercise science science (2001) and a masters in business and sports administration ((2003), both from Texas State University.

Hazle competed at the US National Championships shortly after his graduation. He did not achieve more than fifth place in the javelin throw. He finished as runner-up at the AT&T US Outdoor Championships in 2007, with a throw of 75.06 meters, which was his personal best. This was Hazle’s breakthrough season. Hazle was also eligible for the IAAF World Championships Osaka, Japan. He eventually won a silver medal in the men’s javelin event at the Pan American Games Rio de Janeiro. His seasonal best throw was 75.33 metres.

Hazle continued his runner-up streak at the 2009 and 2010 US Outdoor Track and Field Championships, until he claimed his first ever career title in 2011, with a best throw of 78.22 metres. He was expected to compete for the second time at the IAAF World Championships in Daegu, South Korea, and at the Pan American Games in Guadalajara, Mexico, but forced to withdraw from the competitions because of career ending right elbow injury.’
