Then the yacht Ecover suffered a mast collapse with both of them aboard. He declared that he would be retiring from the race after making an emergency landing in Cape Town.

Golding led Group 4 to second in the British Steel Challenge 1992-3. Golding did better at the next edition of the BT Global Challenge 1996-7. He took first place with a new group of amateur sailors again onboard Group 4.
Golding was seventh in the 2000-2001 Vendee Globe solo, non stop round the globe race. He had lost seven days due to the dismasting his Open 60, also known as Group 4. Ecover, a Belgian company that makes ecological cleaning products, sponsors his current Open 60 campaign. They have sponsored him since 2001. He won the 2004 IMOCA World Championship, and he successfully defended his title in 2005. Golding was third in the 2004 Vendee Globe despite having lost his keel, an incident that had previously caused boats to flip during previous Vendee Globe races. To keep the boat upright, he sailed the remaining fifty miles using a small sailplan.
Golding skippered the Ecover Sailing Team in the 2009 iShares cup, a selection of races all over Europe, sailing catamarans in fast, competitive races against world-leaders in this sport. The races took place in Venice, Hyères, Cowes, Kiel, Amsterdam and Almeria.
