Michael William “Gebi”, born November 25, 1965, is an ex-professional and olympic windsurfer, from the United States. He competed in five consecutive Summer Olympics in the Olympic sailing discipline/event windsurfing. He was born in Columbus Ohio.

Gebhardt was awarded the right to represent America at the 1988 US Olympic Trials. In a high wind regatta Gebhardt survived and won his first Olympic Medal, the Bronze Medal. Gebhardt became a professional windsurfer after the 1988 Olympics. He joined the PWA (Professional Windsurfers Association) to make a living as an athlete.

Gebhardt competed in two more Olympics, the 1996 Atlanta Summer Olympics finishing 6th as well as his last Olympic Games in Sydney, Australia’s 2000 Summer Olympics, where he finished 11th.

After retiring from his 5th Olympics in 2000, Gebi started his coaching career and coached Olympic Gold Medalist Gal Fridman, to Israel’s only Olympic Gold Medal which was won in the 2004 Athens Olympics.

His Olympic career began in 1984 when the 17-year old grom windsurfer finished 3rd at the 1984 L.A. The US Olympic Trials were where Scott Steele was the only winner. He was allowed to represent the USA in the Olympic Windsurfing medal event, which became part of Olympic yachting history for the first time. Gebhardt was invited as Scott Steele’s (1984 Olympic Windsurfing silver medalist); training partner. He was integral in Scott’s winning the first Olympic Windsurfing Medal. Los Angeles: Stephan van den Berg, from the Netherlands, won the gold medal. Bruce Kendall, New Zealand won bronze.

Gebhardt, then 15, learned windsurfing in Fort Walton Beach in the summer 1981. Gebi grew up right on the water and spent his teenage years swimming, freediving, freediving, fishing and sailing with his dad’s wooden 50-foot schooner. Gebi’s younger brother, Gebi, returned home from school on a windsurfer. Gebhardt realized that he had found the right wind- and wave- powered sport to help him love the ocean.
