Michael Anthony Gallego, born October 31, 1960, is an American former professional player and current coach. From 1985 to 1997, he was an infielder in Major League Baseball (MLB). He is most well-known for his role in the Oakland Athletics’ 1989 World Series win and three consecutive American League pennants. He played for the New York Yankees as well as the St. Louis Cardinals. Gallego was a major league coach after his playing career.
Gallego’s career ended with the Cardinals in 1996/97, where he played again under Tony La Russa (his manager during his time with the A-s).
Gallego and his wife Caryn have three children, Joe, Niko and Ali. His son Niko also played for UCLA baseball and was signed with the Arizona Diamondbacks on July 2010. Niko helped the Bruins to the Championship Series of the 2010 College World Series, where they lost to South Carolina for the national championship. Following his graduation from UCLA, Niko began playing for the Visalia Rawhide of the California League. He is the uncle of Los Angeles Dodgers catcher Austin Barnes.
On November 25, 2015, Gallego was announced as director of baseball development for the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. He was promoted to third base coach for the 2019 season, and to bench coach prior to the 2020 season.
Gallego played with the Yankees between 1992 and 1994. He was the last player to don the number 2 uniform prior to Derek Jeter, the Yankees’ former All Star shortstop.

He graduated from St. Paul High School in football and baseball, and then he attended the University of California Los Angeles (1978-1981), where he was a history major. Gallego represented the United States in the 1979 Pan American Games.
Gallego, a Mexican-American of Mexican descent, was born in Whittier and went to St. Paul High School in Santa Fe Springs. During their three-year run in the American League Championships (1988-1990), Gallego was the Athletics’ starting second baseman. This included a sweep of the San Francisco Giants in 1989. He was more known for his glove than his bat throughout his career. He led the AL with 17 sacrifice hits in 1990. In 1995, he had 28 hits and did not have an extra-base hit. This is still the post-1912 record for non-pitchers. Gallego’s career-high of 12 home runs in 1991 was a record.
Gallego was named the Colorado Rockies third base and infield coach in December 2004 to October 7, 2008. He was hired as the A’s third base coach and infield instructor during the 2008 offseason. He was dismissed on August 24, 2015.
