Adolphson is the Keidanren professor of Japanese Studies at University of Cambridge’s Faculty of Asian and Middle Eastern Studies and Fellow of Trinity College Cambridge.
He lived in Kyoto and Osaka for the next two-and-a-half years while studying at Kyoto University. Professor Oyama Kyohei was his mentor. He also coached volleyball at Osaka University of Foreign Studies, and later at Kyoto University. After returning to Sweden, he was appointed head coach of KFUM Goteborg’s women’s volleyball team. They won several tournaments and were fifth in the Elite League.
Adolphson was first appointed as an academic at the University of Oklahoma, 1995-1999. He then moved to Harvard University where he was associate professor of Japanese History and assistant professor. He was appointed Professor of Japanese Cultural Studies to the University of Alberta in 2008. He also served as the chair of the Department of East Asian Studies as well as associate dean of the Faculty of Arts. He was also an associate dean and founded the first pedagogical research center for Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences, the Arts Pedagogy Research and Innovation Laboratory. This unit is where Adolphson’s project-based courses are featured. Since January 2016, Adolphson is the Keidanren Professor in Japanese Studies at Cambridge. The post was previously held by Richard Bowring, Peter Kornicki and Peter Kornicki. In October 2016, Adolphson gave his first lecture at Cambridge. He announced the launch of a new vision in Japanese Studies at Cambridge called Japan and the World.

He graduated from Kalmar’s high school in the late 1970s with a Bachelor of Arts. Lund University awarded him a B.A. in History, Museum and Cultural Studies. He was a premodernist and was inspired by the similarities in Japan and medieval Europe to concentrate his attention on pre-1600 Japan. After two years of studying Japanese at Stockholm University, he was awarded a scholarship by the Japanese Education Ministry in 1986.
He entered Stanford University’s Ph.D. Program in 1989 with Jeffrey Mass as his mentor. He returned to Kyoto University in spring 1992 for his dissertation research. In addition, he worked as an interpreter for the Japan Volleyball Association. He returned to Stanford in the autumn 1993, and completed his dissertation two years later.
