This book was used as the basis of the documentary film Complicated women, directed by Hugh Munro Neely, and narrated in part by Jane Fonda. It originally aired on Turner Classic Movies May 2003. LaSalle was an associate producer and provided commentary.

Complicated Women: LaSalle’s sequel was Dangerous Men, Pre-Code Hollywood and the Birth of the Modern Man. It was published in 2002 by Thomas Dunne. LaSalle has given lectures on film topics at many film festivals including the Hamptons, Denver and Las Vegas, as well as at New York City’s Film Forum and San Francisco’s Castro Theatre. He taught a film class at the University of California at Berkeley for several years. As of 2016, he teaches a course in film at Stanford University Continuing Studies. His third book, “The Beauty of the Real”: What Hollywood Can Learn from Contemporary French Actresses was published in 2012.
