Following an interview with George Lopez and Warner Brother Studios producers, Serros, who had yet to write a script or screenplay, was hired in 2002 to write for the ABC television sitcom, George Lopez. She has stated, “An opportunity that hopefully with my contribution opened the door for a wider representation of Latinos in the mass media”. However, in 2003 during a Christmas visit to her home in New York, Serros realized that she missed writing for her own audience and for her own therapeutic peace of mind. Consequently, she did not renew her contract for a second season.

Serros was a national speaker to schools, universities and organizations. In 2002, she served as the commencement speaker for Stanford University’s La Raza graduation. The same year, Serros was chosen by PEN Center USA to write and perform an original piece honoring John Steinbeck to commemorate the Twentieth Century Masters Tribute where she shared the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts’ stage with literary luminaries as Arthur Miller, William Kennedy, Dorothy Allison, Studs Terkel, Peter Matthiessen and George Plimpton.

As a Santa Monica City College student, Serros published her first collection of poetry and short stories, Chicana Falsa and Other Stories of Death, Identity, and Oxnard in 1994. She continued to sell copies out of her garage after Lalo Press, the original publisher, closed down. However, she maintained a loyal following of readers and a place in academia, where Chicana Falsa was required reading in many high school and university campuses in Southern California.

Serros believes that she was not a “nerdy, withdraw teen” who ate lunch in school yards alone, contrary to what many others have claimed. Serros was a Rio Mesa High School student. She was invited to give commencement speeches across the country and to attend book fairs. Michele met Antonio Magana, a restaurateur, in the summer 2010. Antonio invited Michele to a lunch date after learning that they had attended the same highschool and came from the same town. They got engaged Christmas night that year, and they were married on the roof of the judge’s chambers in New York City in the summer 2011. They settled in California, but they also made New York their home.

Chicana Falsa’s success, Serros was chosen in 1994 to be one of 12 poets who would travel across the country with Lollapalooza, a touring music festival. She read her poetry on the festival’s second stage. In 1997, after learning of an extensive Life and Styles feature of Serros in The Los Angeles Times, Julie Grau (then an editor at Riverhead Books) phoned Serros to inquire about the rights to Chicana Falsa. The following year, Riverhead Books (Penguin/Putnam) reissued Chicana Falsa as well as published a book of short stories, Los Angeles Times Best Seller, How to be a Chicana Role Model in 2000.
