Michel Onfray is one of the most popular and richest Philosopher who was born on January 1, 1959 in Argentan, Normandy, France. Michel Onfray, French philosopher and writer (French: [miSel ofRe]; born January 1959) He is an author of philosophy who has written over 100 books. His worldview includes epicurean, hedonistic and atheist views. His philosophy is heavily influenced by thinkers such as Epicurus and Nietzsche as well as French materialism.

Onfray supported the French Revolutionary Communist League’s candidate for the French presidency, Olivier Besancenot, in the 2002 election. He endorsed Jose Bove in 2007, but voted for Olivier Besancenot. Onfray also conducted an interview with Nicolas Sarkozy for Philosophie Magazine.

Onfray is an atheist and author of Traité d’Athéologie (Atheist Manifesto), which “became the number one best-selling nonfiction book in France for months when it was published in the Spring of 2005 (the word ‘atheologie’ Onfray borrowed from Georges Bataille). This book repeated its popular French success in Italy, where it was published in September 2005 and quickly soared to number one on Italy’s bestseller lists.”

Onfray has published 9 books under a project of history of philosophy called Counter-history of Philosophy. In each of these books Onfray deals with a particular historical period in western philosophy. The series of books are composed by the titles I. L’Eudémonisme social (2008) (on radical utilitarian and eudomonistic thought), VI. Les Radicalités existentielles (2009) (on 19th and 20th century radical existentialist thinkers) and VII. La construction du surhomme: Jean-Marie Guyau, Friedrich Nietzsche (on Guyau´s and Nietzsche´s philosophy in relation to the concept of the Übermensch). VIII. Les Freudiens hérétiques (2013). IX. Les Consciences réfractaires (2013).

Onfray taught high school philosophy for over 20 years until he decided to resign in 2002 to start a tuition-free Universite Populaire at Caen. He and his colleagues also teach other subjects.

Onfray was born in Argentan to Norman farmers and sent to Catholic boarding school every week from the ages of 10-14. Many parents in France found this solution when their children were too far away from the school or they had to travel long distances to get them to school. However, the young Onfray didn’t like his new environment. He described it as a place filled with suffering. Onfray graduated with a teaching diploma in philosophy. This subject was taught to seniors at a high school in Caen that focuses on technical degrees between 1983 and 2002. He and his friends founded the Universite populaire du Caen. They did so on a non-profit basis, based on Onfray’s 2004 manifesto (La communaute philosophique).

He is best known for his works Traite d’atheologie: Physique de la metaphysique, Politique du rebelle, traite de résistance et d’insoumission and Physiologie de Georges Palante. In 1993, he was awarded the Prix Medicis.
