1951. He founded Harry Cover in Paris in 1973 and was an influential figure in the early development and evolution of punk rock. In 1978, he and Michael Zilkha established ZE Records, based in New York.

After a dispute with Zilkha in 1982, Esteban fled New York. He produced the 1983 album Paolino Parc of French new wave band Octobre. He continued his close relationship with Lizzy Mercier descloux, traveling, recording, and doing promotional work in Asia and Africa. He produced her successful single “Mais ou sont passees les gazelles? He also produced the single “Mais ou sont passees les gazelles?” and the albums Lizzy Mercier Descloux (1984), and One For The Soul (86). He began to work with Lio, a Portuguese-born Belgian singer, in 1986. They produced her albums Pop Model (1986), and Cancan (1988). Their daughter was born in 1987, but they split in 1989.

Esteban split his time between Paris, New York and formed Rebel Records in

1977. He also recorded Marie & les Garcons. He worked in New York with John Cale who introduced him to Michael Zilkha, an entrepreneur and writer from Britain. Before Esteban and Zilkha went on to create ZE Records, they set up Cale’s record label SPY. Esteban was still in a relationship at the time with Anna Wintour, fashion editor. Over the next four decades, ZE was one of the most popular and fashionable record labels around the globe. It recorded such artists as Kid Creole & the Coconuts and Bill Laswell.

Esteban was born and raised in Paris. He studied graphic arts at L’Ecole d’Arts Graphiques, Paris, starting in 1968. In 1973, he opened Harry Cover in Rue des Halles. This shop specialized in rock merchandise, magazines, books, as well as import records from the USA and UK. Bands used the basement as rehearsal space, especially during the emergence of punk rock in the 1970s. Esteban traveled the US in 1974, and returned to New York in order to study under Milton Glaser at The School of Visual Arts. Patti Smith, Robert Mapplethorpe and Richard Hell became friends with Esteban, as well as John Cale and Tom Verlaine, who were regular visitors to the CBGB music nightclub.

In 1975, he returned to Paris and founded Rock News. This magazine chronicled the emergence and growth of punk music in France, the UK, and the US. He also made contact with Richard Robinson, Lester Bangs and Danny Fields in the US and Malcolm McLaren in England. He attended many early punk concerts in England with his then-girlfriend Lizzy Mercier descloux. Mercier Descloux also published Desiderata, Mercier’s first collection of poems, along with Witt and The Night by Patti Smith. He promoted the first French punk rock concerts with the Sex Pistols, in September 1976. Also, he promoted the French band Stinky Toys, in England.

During the 1990s, Esteban retreated from the music business and studied esoteric disciplines including Theosophy and Sufism. Later in the decade he recorded musicians in Cuba. In 2003 he re-established ZE Records, based in Paris, which has reissued many of the label’s original recordings as well as new material, including Glasgow band Michael Dracula. He now lives in Salvador da Bahia, Brazil, where he has a cultural arts center project including galleries and recording studios.
