In 1992, she married Lars Hannibal, guitarist and lutenist. However, they split in 2010. They still perform together, having given more than 1,500 concerts and making numerous recordings. They founded the record label OUR Recordings together. Petri is particularly interested in the use of recorder and guitar together, and has collaborated with guitarists such as Goran Sollscher and Kazuhito Yamashita. Two albums of sonatas written by J. S. Bach, G. F. Handel and Keith Jarrett were one of her notable collaborations. She has also recorded with the London Philharmonic Orchestra and Pinchas Zukerman.

Petri began playing the recorder when she was three years old. She is known for her versatility and virtuosity across a variety of styles, including the baroque repertoire at the height of its popularity, to contemporary works that were written especially for her. At the age of five she played her first radio performance on Danish Radio. Her debut solo performance was in Copenhagen’s Tivoli concert hall, when she was 11. She has performed dozens of pieces by Richard Harvey, Malcolm Arnold, Gordon Jacob, and Thomas Koppel. At Victor Borge’s eightieth, she performed Vittorio Monti’s Csardas. That was her most difficult challenge in her professional career.
Petri studied under Prof. Ferdinand Conrad at Hannover’s Staatliche Hochschule fur Musik und Theater, partly because she was too young to be a full-time student of Denmark. In March 1976, she gave her first recital on BBC radio. The BBC also released a recording recital in 1977. Leo Black wrote in the sleeve notes for this recording, “One realizes what can happen when an mighty talent begins young enough.” Hanne Petri, her mother, studied at the Royal Danish Academy of Music. Her brother, David Petri won the Danish Young Musician of the year Award in 1978. He is a cellist. Both recorded with Michala under the name The Petri Trio (or Michala Trio). She signed an exclusive contract with Philips Records in 1979 that lasted through 1987. She is currently recording for the RCA Red Seal label.
