This was contrary his personal preference. The Order of Merit was also awarded to former Prime Minister Thatcher. She was also made a life peer following her resignation as an MP in 1992. Sir Denis Thatcher applied for and received an award of arms from College of Arms in 1992 for him and his successors in baronetcy. Baroness Thatcher was also granted arms.

The Thatcher baronetcy of Scotney, County of Kent was created in 1990 for Denis Thatcher (the husband of Margaret Thatcher), following his resignation on 28 November. Mark Thatcher is the current holder, having succeeded his father in 2003.
