Austrian politician Michael Spindelegger was born 21 December 1959. From 2008 to 2013, he was the foreign minister of Austria and finance minister, respectively. He also held the office as vice-chancellor between 2011 and 2014. Spindelegger was also leader of the Austrian People’s Party, (OVP), from 2011 to 2014. He unexpectedly resigned all of his political positions in August 2014. He has been the Director General of ICMPD, the Vienna-based International Centre for Migration Policy Development (ICMPD) since 2016.

He worked from 1987 to 1990 for Robert Lichal, the Austrian Defense Minister, and between 1990-1994 for several companies in Austria and Germany including Siemens.

From 1992 to 1993, Spindelegger was Member of the Federal Council of Austria.

From December 1993 to March 1995, and since October 1996, Spindelegger was a member of the National Council of Austria (Nationalrat). Between October 1996 and October 2006, he was his party’s Speaker on Foreign Affairs, and head of the Parliamentary Committee on Foreign Affairs.

He worked as a judge’s aid at Vienna’s Courts of Law from 1983 to 1984 and as a civil servant in the Federal State of Lower Austria from 1984 to 1987.

Spindelegger was born at Modling in Lower Austria. His father Erich was a railway worker, union leader and mayor of Hinterbruhl. He represented Modling in the National Council of the Austrian Parliament. He attended Hinterbruhl school (1965-1969), and Modling’s Keimgasse gym (1969-1977). He was a reserve officer in the Austrian Armed Forces for one year from 1977 to 1978. He studied law at the University of Vienna from 1978 to 1983.
