Roll was a UCLA freshman in 2005-06 and played on the 32-7 Bruins team that lost to Florida in 2006. Roll played 15 minutes per game that season and was ranked behind Cedric Bozeman and Arron Afflalo. UCLA coach Ben Howland described him as “an important contributor.” He played alongside Josh Shipp and Afflalo the following season as UCLA made it to the Final Four. He was a junior and was beaten by Russell Westbrook for the starting spot. UCLA reached the Final Four again, but Roll’s season was cut short by a ruptured left plantar fascia. He was granted a medical Redshirt and is now eligible for another year as a junior. He was back the next season but continued to play a supporting role behind Jrue Holiday and Shipp. Roll and the Bruins qualified again for the NCAA Tournament but were eliminated in round 32.

Roll, a senior fifth year, was a key player for the Bruins over many years. He became the team’s leader in 2009-10 after he had been a senior fifth-year. After the retirement of senior Shipp, Darren Collison and Alfred Aboya, Roll was forced into his new position. He would have been fourth on the team, behind Holiday, Westbrook, Kevin Love, and Westbrook, if they hadn’t declared for the National Basketball Association early. Roll was prepared for the extra workload by preparing with a workout program that included basketball workouts twice daily, ball-handling drills and 500 shots per day. He also did a weight- training program in order to strengthen his back and legs. Six freshmen and six sophomores made up UCLA’s roster for the season. Roll, Nikola Dragovic, James Keefe, and James Keefe were all seniors. Keefe’s season was cut short by a shoulder injury that ended his season. UCLA lost to California 85-72 in the Pacific-10 Conference Tournament semifinals despite Roll scoring 27 points. He scored 22.5 points per game in tournament games and was named to All- Tournament. The Bruins failed to qualify for the NCAA tournament this season, finishing the season at 14-18. Roll was awarded first team All-Pac-10 recognition and was named the Bruins most valuable player. He led the team in scoring, scoring 14.1 points per match. Roll also set the school record with 146 career games played. This surpasses Collison’s (142) previous mark. Roll was chosen to participate in the Reese’s College All-Star Game at the Final Four.

On July 24, 2011, Roll signed with the Belgian team Antwerp Giants for the 2011–12 season. On November 8, 2011, Roll recorded a career-high 27 points, shooting 13-of-17 from the field, along with four rebounds and three assists in a 72–76 loss to BC Enisey. Roll helped Antwerp to reach the 2012 Belgian Cup Final, where they eventually lost to Okapi Aalstar.
