Michael Curtis Munger (/’ m n g@r /; September 23, 1958) was an economist. He is currently the chair of Duke University’s political science department, where he teaches economics, public policy, political science and political science. His book Analyzing Policy, Choices, Conflicts and Practices, which he wrote, is a classic in the field. He was the Libertarian candidate to Governor of North Carolina in 2008.

Munger ran for governor of North Carolina as a Libertarian candidate in 2008 because he felt that North Carolina voters needed a different to the duopoly. Munger stated that Democratic challenger BevPerdue to the gubernatorial post was a “Stepford Wife” while the Republican nominees were “circus fools” in early 2008. Before May 2008, the North Carolina Libertarian Party (Munger) had gathered 100,000 signatures from voters to be eligible to appear on North Carolina’s electoral ballot. They sued the state along with the Green Party over the rules for access to the ballot. Munger was an expert witness in several other cases for the Green Party as well as the ACLU.

Following the election, Nick Gillespie of Reason magazine wrote: “I humbly submit that Duke University political science professor Michael Munger, who ran a strong bid as a Libertarian Party candidate for governor in North Carolina, set his eyes toward an even bigger and remote target in 2012, that stationary Death Star known as the White House.”

At Duke, Munger says he works “across the aisles – there aren’t a lot of other Libertarians there.”

Munger was one of the two keynote speakers at Denver’s Libertarian Convention in May 2008. Later, he became the first third-party candidate in North Carolina to take part in a live, televised debate for gubernatorial office.

He then became a Duke University political science professor in 1997. He was appointed head of Duke’s department of political science in 2000. His research focuses on elections and campaign financing.

In 2011, Munger portrayed a security guard at the beginning of a video titled “Fight of the Century”, featuring a rap battle between actors portraying economists John Meynard Keynes and Friedrich Hayek, discussing the effects of government spending on the economy. As of December 2017, the video has amassed over 3.8 million views.
