Michael Melchior Biography

Michael Melchior is one of the most popular and richest Politician who was born on January 31, 1954 in Copenhagen, Capital Region of Denmark, Denmark. Melchior is a descendant of seven generations Danish rabbis. He was born in Copenhagen in 1954. Marcus Melchior, Melchior’s grandfather, was instrumental in the rescue of more than 7200 Danish Jews from Nazi Denmark. He served as the country’s chief Rabbi until his death in 1969. Michael was ordained an Orthodox Rabbi at Yeshivat Hakotel in Jerusalem in 1980. He returned to Scandinavia shortly thereafter to become Chief Rabbi of Norway.

Meimad was part of the One Israel alliance, which included the Labor Party and Gesher in the 1999 elections. Melchior was elected to a seat and appointed Minister of Social and Diaspora Affairs, on the 5th August 1999. This post he held until Ariel Sharon’s election as Prime Minister in 2001. Melchior was reelected as a member the Knesset’s joint list in 2003, 2006 and Meimad maintained its alliance with Labor Party. Meimad separated from the alliance in 2008 and ran in partnership alongside the Green Movement in 2009 elections. However, he failed to win a seat. He announced that he would not be participating in Knesset elections on December 14, 2012.

In 2002, Melchior established Meitarim – a network of pluralistic Jewish schools in Israel where religious and secular students can grow up and learn together in kindergartens, schools, pre- and post-military institutions in a non-coercive approach, enabling multi interpretations and expressions of Jewish heritage in order to take responsibility for a common Jewish heritage and vision.

In 2010, Melchior involved himself in economic issues. He co-founded the Israel Civic Action Forum which promotes higher taxation on income from the extraction of natural resources, and the use of the tax income for higher government spending to increase government spending on welfare, education, and health.

Melchior joined politics in 1995 with the Meimad party. Melchior was Amital’s assistant when Rabbi Yehuda Amital became minister without portfolio in November 1995. In 1996, Melchior was elected chairman of the Meimad party’s managing committee.

Michael Melchior (Hebrew myKHAl mlKHyAvr – born January 31, 1954) was a Jewish leader and Orthodox rabbi. He is also a thinker and activist. He was a former Minister for Social and Diaspora Affairs and a former Deputy minister of Foreign Affairs. He also served as a member of Knesset For Meimad. While still the Chief Rabbi of Norway, he is the Rabbi of Talpiyot (Jerusalem), a vibrant community.

He immigrated to Israel in 1986 and settled down with his family there. While still being the Chief Rabbi of Norway, he was honored by this title.

In 2002, Melchior initiated, together with his Palestinian counterpart Sheikh Talal Sider, an inter-religious summit in Alexandria, Egypt, co-sponsored by the Mufti of Egypt, Grand Imam of al-Azhar Mosque, and Grand Sheikh of al- Azhar University, Muhammad Sayyid Tantawi; Archbishop of Canterbury George Carey; and Eliyahu Bakshi-Doron, Israel’s Chief Rabbi. The summit, which launched The Alexandria Process, brought together religious leaders from the Middle-East to adopt common principles aimed at preventing the region’s religious sensibilities being exploited during conflicts, and declaring the need to work together towards peaceful solutions of the conflicts. Together with Elie Wiesel, Melchior established the Mosaica Center for Interreligious Cooperation – MERPI (Middle East Religious Peace Initiative) to “lead to the implementation” of the principles of the Alexandria Declaration. Melchior is also a member of the Elijah Interfaith Institute Board of World Religious Leaders.
