Manring has been a member of DeMania since 2005, along with guitarist Alex de Grassi (percussionist) and Christopher Garcia (percussionist). Manring is still active and travels the globe for clinics and performances. He resides in Oakland, California.
Manring was the house bassist at Windham Hill Records for many years. He also recorded with Spastic Ink and Alex Skolnick (in Skol-Patrol, Attention Deficit and Tim Alexander from Primus), Larry Kassin and Steve Morse. He was the head of his own band Montreux throughout the 1980s. Since its inception, he has been a member Yo Miles! Henry Kaiser, Wadada LeoSmith’s Miles Davis tribute group. The readers of Bass Player magazine voted Manring Bassist of Year in 1994. Manring’s name is also linked with Michael Hedges who was a close friend and fellow musician. Manring was a frequent tour companion of Hedges, and he played on all Hedges albums. Manring is a gracious and humble performer who has a gift for improvisation.

Michael Manring was the youngest of his four siblings and was born in Annapolis Maryland. His family was originally from Norfolk, Virginia. They moved to Washington, D.C. in 1969. Michael was influenced by the Manrings, a musically active family that provided a rich musical background. Doug, his brother, a guitarist and drummer who later lived in Japan, formed a rhythm group during high school. They played jazz rock and fusion at beer parties and performed at weddings.
Manring was once a student of Peter Princiotto, a bassist from Spring Hill, Virginia. In the late 1970s, he began studying at Berklee College of Music, Boston, Massachusetts. However, he canceled his studies in 1979 due to the overwhelming workload. He was touring with many bands, including the Prog Rock band However. He played with many different bands and musicians during his time at Berklee College. He began developing his own style after touring with Jaco Pastorius in the 1980s.
Because of his association with the Windham Hill label Manring often was seen as a New Age musician. He doesn’t see himself as belonging to a certain style or genre and often jokes about categorising his music. His album Thonk he termed for example “… the first New Age–Death metal–Fusion–album”.
