Long’s career was cut short in 1999 when he broke the C5 bone in his neck during a boogie board accident. After a quick recovery, Long turned his attention to America and began playing on the second-tier Buy.com Tour. This became the Nationwide Tour in 2003. This level was a success for him. He won the 2001 Buy.com Boise Open as well as the 2003 VB Open. In the playoff for the 2004 Lake Erie Charity Classic, he lost. He was able to finish high enough on the money list twice to be eligible for the PGA Tour. He played two full seasons on both the main tour in 2002 and 2005 but was not able to keep his card. Long played on the Buy.com/Nationwide Tour between 2000 and 2007, with the exception of two seasons on the main PGA Tour.

Long was born in Cromwell (New Zealand). Long began playing golf while he was living at Waitangi, where his father worked. He later attended Waikato University. As an amateur, he won the New Zealand under-18 title, 1988 under-21 title, 1989 under-23 title, 1989 under-23 title, and 1990 New Zealand Amateur Championship. In the 1990 Eisenhower Trophy in Christchurch, he was part of the four-man New Zealand team. The team was joint runners-up with Sweden. Individually, Long was the third-best scorer, just behind two Swedes.

After the Eisenhower Trophy, Long became a professional golfer and joined the PGA Tour of Australasia. Despite not having much success on his home tour, he traveled to the United States to participate in the PGA Tour Q school at the end 1995. He was awarded a spot on the second-tier 1996 Nike Tour. Between March and August, he played in nine tournaments. He tied for fourth in the Nike Permian Basin Open. This was despite only playing 74. Long’s success in America was followed by his 1996/1997 Australasian Tour season. These results saw him rise from the bottom 800 to the top 100 in the Official World Golf Rankings. He won the 1996 New Zealand Open. This was his greatest success as a professional. He was the runner-up at the Johnnie Walker Classic in January 1997, which was cosponsored by the European Tour. He won A$121,000. Ernie Els won this event by one stroke over Long and Peter Lonard. Long was penalised with a one stroke penalty for moving his ball after he addressed it on the 15th green. Long was third in the Greg Norman Holden International and the Schweppes Coolum Classic, as well as three other top-10 finishes.
