Gernhardt was a professional diver, project engineer and diver from 1977 to 1984 on various subsea oilfield construction and repair projects. Gernhardt has over 700 deep-sea dives and is proficient in mixed gas, bounce bell, saturation, and air diving. Gernhardt completed a graduate program at the University of Pennsylvania and created a new decompression model that was based on tissue bubble dynamics. Gernhardt then took part in field implementation and development of several new decompression tables. Gernhardt was a Manager and Vice President of Special Projects for Oceaneering International from 1984 to 1988. He was responsible for the creation of a telerobotic system to clean and inspect subsea platforms. He founded Oceaneering Space Systems in 1988. This company was created to transfer subsea technology to the ISS program. Between 1988 and 1992, he worked to develop new robot-compatible tools that could be used for maintenance on Space Station Freedom. He was also involved in the development of portable life support systems, and compression procedures for extra-vehicular activities.
