Michael Korstick has recorded more than 50 CDs to date, including Beethoven’s 32 piano sonatas. The complete edition was released in 2012. He was the recipient of the Echo Klassik Prize in Germany in 2005, the MIDEM Classical Award in Cannes in 2009 and six “Awards of the German Record Critics” in November 2014.
The Suddeutsche Zeitung and Die Zeit have featured articles about his 2003 recording of Beethoven’s Sonata Op.106 (“Hammerklavier”) Jurgen Otten listed him as one of four German piano players in his 2009 standard book “Die grossen Pianisten der Gegenwart”. In Ingo Harden and Gregor Willmes’ “PianistenProfile”(Pianists Profiles) his playing is described to be of “overwhelming intensity”.

Michael Korstick began piano lessons when he was nine years old. He won the first prize in the “Jugend musiziert” competition in Cologne at age 11. After graduating high school, he entered the Staatliche Hochschule fur Musik (Cologne) as a student under Jurgen Troster. In 1974, he was made a Hans Leygraf student in Hanover. He also took master classes with Tatiana Nikolayeva, a Russian pianist. They worked together on numerous occasions. In 1975, he made his concert debut in Cologne performing Beethoven’s sonatas Op.106 and Op.111.
Korstick emigrated to the United States in 1976 to pursue his studies at The Juilliard School, New York. He was a scholarship student under Sascha Gorodnitzki from 1976 to 1983. Jeaneane Dowis taught him several summers at Aspen Music Festival School. He won the Competition of German Music Council and returned to Germany in 1983 to begin his concert career.
