Freytag, who was previously Chairman and Senator of Finance, resigned in March 2010 to become CEO of Schufa Holding AG. Since November 2010, he has been the CEO of the company.
Freytag was elected to the Hamburg-Nord district assembly as a member in 1982. From 1986 to 2000, he was the Chairman of the CDU parliamentary committee and from 2000 to 2007, he was the District Chairman for Hamburg-Nord. He was also the Deputy Chairman for Hamburg of the CDU from 2002 to 2007. He was elected to succeed Dirk Fischer as chairman of the CDU Hamburg on 15 September 2007, with 93.62% votes. With 72.95% of votes, he was reelected in June 2008.

After finishing school in 1977 at Wandsbeker Matthias-Claudius-Gymnasium, Freytag first completed an apprenticeship as a bank clerk and then studied law at the University of Hamburg. He worked for a time in the overseas offices of Germany’s Federal Republic in Chicago and the German Business Association of Hong Kong. He graduated in 1990 with a PhD thesis about the limits and possibilities of reforming the German Bundestag’s parliamentary system. Michael Freytag was employed at Deutsche Bank in corporate banking from 1991 to 2001. Freytag then moved to politics full-time. Michael Freytag is married with three children.
He was elected as the senator for urban development and environment of Hamburg by the state government headed by Ole von Beust on 17 March 2004. On January 1, 2007, he succeeded Wolfgang Peiner to the position of finance senator of Hamburg.
