As an assistant, he was appointed to the Canadian team manager Benito Floro’s team in November 2013. He was responsible for the management of the team’s 2015 Gold Cup campaign and its 2018 World Cup qualifying campaign. He was also an assistant to the Canadian U23 team’s 2016 Olympic qualifying campaign. Then, he became the head coach for that program the next year, for a friendly trip in the Caribbean.
In 2009, he was an assistant coach at an official FIFA event. He worked under Sean Fleming during the 2009 CONCACAF U-17 Championship. Later, he was an assistant to Valerio Gazzola at U-20 Championship 2011 and Phillip Dos Santos during the 2013 Jeux de la Francophonie.

After being selected in the 1981 NASL High School Draft, Findlay came to Scotland at the age of 16. He spent three years trying to land professional deals with Celtic and Partick Thistle, but was unsuccessful. He lived in Scotland with David Moyes and his family, who were Celtic players at the time.
Findlay was appointed Director of Football Development in 2004 and began his involvement with the Canadian men’s national soccer program. He worked under Stephen Hart as a coach at a Burnaby U17 team camp. Findlay was a coach for four years at all levels of the Canadian men’s soccer programme from the U15 to the senior teams.
In September 2016, he was announced as interim head coach of the Canadian national team. During his leadership Canada’s FIFA ranking improved by 8 places and posted a 2 w 2 L 1 T record before returning to his role as assistant coach of the senior team.
