Mike began his campaign for public office in Pennsylvania’s first 148th Legislative district in 2004. Gerber was running against Melissa Murphy Weber (an incumbent Republican who was elected in 2002 and just finished her first term). Gerber won by 462 votes over Murphy Weber in a close race. Gerber was trailing for much of the race. Gerber continued to campaign, and soon the race was even. Analysts and pundits attribute Gerber’s win to his extreme efforts to reach out to voters in the district. He knocked on thousands of doors to get to know them. Gerber was also a Montgomery County native and is well- versed in the area. Gerber was able to establish deep personal relationships with the voters of the district.
The 2005 Pennsylvania General Assembly pay raise controversy was a major topic of contention during this election. The bill would have allowed state legislators to receive a substantial increase in their salaries. Representative Gerber voted no to the pay increase. Gerber opposed the pay increase and sponsored legislation to repeal the bill after it passed. The bill was eventually repealed.
In addition to his other responsibilities, Representative Gerber is a member of the Committee on Committees, the Children and Youth Committee. He also served on the Insurance Committee from 2007-2009.
