He served as the Leader of Opposition in New South Wales’ Parliament from November 2018 through March 2019. Since 2005, he is a member in the New South Wales Legislative Assembly as Maroubra for Australian Labor Party. Daley is aligned to the Labor Right faction.

Daley married Christina Ithier, whom he “at a fotocopier” at his 1997 legal firm. Daley considers her to have two children from a previous marriage. Since then, he and Christina have had two more children, Olivia (12 in Jan 2019) and Austin (8 in January 2019).

On 19 March, a September 2018 video surfaced in which Daley made comments about Asian immigration in Sydney. Daley said “Our young children will flee and who are they being replaced with? They are being replaced by young people from typically Asia with PhDs,” and “So there’s a transformation happening in Sydney now where our kids are moving out and foreigners are moving in and taking their jobs”.

Following Luke Foley’s resignation of the role, Daley nominated for the role of New South Wales Labor leader and Leader of the New South Wales Opposition. On 10 November 2018, Daley won the leadership spill against Chris Minns 33 votes to 12 and was elected as the Leader of the Labor Party in New South Wales and became the 38th NSW Leader of the Opposition.

After the retirement of Bob Carr, former premier, Daley was elected in 2005 to represent Maroubra in the Australian Labor Party. Daley was on the backbench from September 2005 to the elevation Nathan Rees to Premier of New South Wales, when Daley became Minister for Roads. This portfolio was held by Daley until September 2009’s cabinet reshuffle, when he was appointed Minister for Police as well as Minister for Finance.

Daley is from an Irish Catholic family. He graduated from Randwick’s Marcellin College in 1983. He worked as a Customs officer for the Australian Customs Service for 13 years. During this time, he also studied law at night. After completing his legal studies, he was admitted as a legal practitioner to the Supreme Court of New South Wales in 1998. He then began to pursue a career in law and spent a year at a central Sydney law firm before becoming a senior in- house attorney with NRMA Motoring and Services for five years.

Daley was elected in Randwick City Council 1995 as a councillor. He also served as deputy mayor 2000-2004.

When Kristina Keneally became Premier in December 2009 he remained as Minister for Police and Minister for Finance until the 2011 state election. Daley was believed to be a potential candidate for the Labor leadership, however, did not contest it. As a result, John Robertson was elected unopposed as Keneally’s replacement, and Daley was appointed as Shadow Treasurer and Shadow Minister for Finance and Services in the Robertson shadow ministry.
