Michael Coteau, born June 21, 1972, is a Canadian politician. He is a Liberal member of Ontario’s Legislative Assembly and has been representing the Don Valley East riding of Toronto since 2011. From 2013 to 2018, he was a cabinet member in Kathleen Wynne’s government. Coteau was one seven Liberals who were re-elected after the Liberal party lost in the 2018 Ontario general elections. Coteau is the MPP for Don Valley East and the Ontario Liberal Party Critic. He is responsible for Infrastructure, Energy, Labour, Economic Development, Job Creation, and Trade. With 16.9% of the vote, he was second in the 2020 Ontario Liberal Party Leadership Election.

The Liberals won a minority government, and Coteau was named parliamentary assistant to minister of tourism and cultural. Coteau was appointed Minister of Citizenship and Immigration in 2013 after Kathleen Wynne succeeded Dalton McGuinty to the premiership. Coteau was one of ten cabinet members with no previous cabinet experience. Premier Kathleen Wynne appointed Coteau Minister of Tourism, Culture, and Sport in June 2014. He also made him Minister Responsible for the 2015 Pan and Parapan American Games. Coteau was a prominent advocate for street hockey for children. Coteau was appointed Minister of Children and Youth Services on February 16, 2016. He will be responsible for the establishment of various anti-racism programmes. He was named Minister of Children and Youth Services on June 13, 2016. He worked closely with parents to create a reformated Ontario Autism Program. He was also appointed Minister of Community and Social Services and held three portfolios for government.

In June 2019, Coteau entered the race for leadership of the Ontario Liberal Party. Coteau said he had “a different vision” and would “restore decency to our politics”. At the leadership convention on March 7, 2020, he received 16.9% of the vote, finishing second behind the winner, Steven Del Duca.

He ran for the Don Valley East riding provincial election in 2011. He beat Michael Lende, the PC candidate, by 7,645 votes. In 2014, he was re-elected.

Coteau was born at Huddersfield in England. His father is Grenada-born and his mother is British. He arrived in Canada in 1976 with his parents and was raised in Flemingdon Park, North York. Coteau’s family had low income so he borrowed money from his father to pay the university application fee. He applied to Carleton University, and he graduated with a degree both in history and politics.

He also worked as a community organizer with the United Way in Malvern, Ontario. Coteau also owned and managed his own small business.

In 2018, Coteau defeated Conservative candidate Denzil Minnan Wong, Toronto’s deputy mayor, to win his third election in the North Toronto constituency. He is one of the seven Liberal MPPs in the Legislature.
